I always like to see the process behind a painting. I also find that treat a painting like you are intending it to show a process, you tend to concentrate on each process rather than rushing to a finish. So here's a block on to a .... cleaner block in. I know it's a little redundant, but I was pretty happy with the first pass, and how much of it was retained in the "final". It almost looks like I knew what I was doing. For the record, I never feel like I really do.

I recently invested in an IPad, and these are some studies from the past week. Mostly from Burbank . Using the sketchbook pro app, and trying to keep these 40-60 minutes. I'm aiming for one a day. Lets see if I can keep it up.

Baltimore: The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire

I really liked this book, written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. I read it twice. That's a big deal for me. These are a couple of the characters (from left to right) Aischros, Dr. Rose, Childress, and Mr. Grey. I tried to go with a more graphic look, moving towards stronger shapes and less detail, and was really influenced by 50's animation design. Hopefully I'll paint them up as if they were 3d models. How awesome would it be to have a 3d animated movie, pushed in terms of design and content. Vampires, man eating marionettes, lake monsters, plagues, and demon bears that crawl out of soldiers all taking place during WW1. Del Toro.... dude.... get crackin'.

Here's some work that finally got cleared to show. This is work I did as a Trainee at Walt Disney Animation Studios. This was my take on Hansel and Gretel. I had some great mentors and some really great fellow trainees to work around. All done with either pen/pencil or photoshop (and since I've been asked, the paintings on the bottom are not 3D models). This was a struggle and a half. It started off as practice for armor, but with a weak pose. As if trying to design wasn't hard enough, but constantly revisiting the pose was....... frustrating. Learned a lot. The axe is an epic fail. I may revisit it and edit the post.

I initially posted this and hated it, so I took it down. Sargent studies pale in comparison to the originals..... always. I felt like, at the time, I should have learned more on this one, but in retrospect I did. The paintings where there is less going on are the more difficult ones. I also stumbled on to a new brush that kind of works like when you apply a stroke on already built up oils. Ben, we should go drawing, or I'll take your online class. One of the two.

Sargent Study again

Despite my low moral doing these (how good can you feel about yourself studying a Sargent painting), I actually do enjoy doing these. The palette is limited (at least that's how it looks, it might just be the reproductions), so it's interesting to see how he went about doing temperature shifts with a warm palette, and how he was reserved in his values. This was a looser painting, so I tried to paint it smaller on my screen to force myself to avoid noodeling. I still noodled, just less than normal.

Grendel's Cave

Been pretty busy lately, and this is all I have to show for the moment. Just trying to figure out what Grendel's cave is, hence the one camera angle. I want to figure out what the surrounding area looks like, since it's the closest thing I have to a set in this story. I still don't have the mood I want, but I'm leaning in the direction of the bottom one. The Plane is supposed to be a Ju-88. It's very distinctive in the air, but less so in a crash site. Most planes disintegrate on impact, so it's going to be a little tricky working this one out. On a side note, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

Exploring for a new project. There are no tigers in Africa, the Maasai do not live in jungles..... but there is a thread there... somewhere. It's a version of Beowulf that includes most things I don't know how to draw. Tigers, Jungles, Trees, Plants, Maasai warriors..... smart Ryan, real smart.

Anyone in my class knows I'm pulling my hair out over one thumbnail that I can't seem to get right. On another note, thanks to Adam, I now know this architecture style is called Tudor. And yes, the shader packet is basically photo collage, but no 3d. I might tweak it a bit more.
